Panda Trail: Themed Tourist Trains Through China

A different way to cross China: small-capacity tourist trains built around a single cultural theme, with en-suite cabins, dining cars, observation lounges and a service ratio that no standard group tour can match. Panda Trail runs four themed trains departing from Chengdu and Guangzhou, with 2027 journeys through Xinjiang and the southwest.

Why These Trains Are Different

• A themed train, not a carriage on a normal service. Splendid Tianfu is designed around Shu brocade and Song dynasty aesthetics; Splendid Orient follows Han and Tang court style; Baiyun takes the Chinese scholar's studio as its theme. Interiors, dining and service follow that theme throughout the journey.
• A mobile intangible-heritage museum. On the Tianfu consist, cultural scholars travel with the group, and craft tables in the observation car host heritage workshops en route.
• Panda butler service and a high staff ratio. Guest-to-staff ratios run at about 1:2 on the 92-guest trains and 1:1.5 on the 66-guest train.
• Fewer guests than a coach tour. The Splendid Orient is the smallest-capacity full 18-car luxury consist operating in China, with 66 guests. Cabins are private, with en-suite bathrooms rather than shared facilities.
• Routes that stop where the landscape is. Accommodation is chosen for the view: camps, remote guesthouses and hotels inside scenic areas, instead of city properties every night.
• Slower days, by design. The 2027 programmes favour fewer stops with more time in each: courtyard tea, light mountain walking, regional cooking and craft sessions rather than consecutive check-ins.

The Four Trains

Cabins and Onboard Life

• Suite cabins (about 13 square metres) with separated dry and wet bathrooms, minibar, sofa and tea table, and premium bedding and bath amenities.
• Quality double cabins (about 10 square metres) with convertible twin beds, storage, private bathroom and, in selected cabins, a fold-out sofa suitable for a child.
• Dining car with buffet stations and table service; regional menus are built around the route.
• Welcome car and tea bar for briefings, tea service and quiet afternoons.
• Observation and entertainment car with a viewing lounge, card and games room, and a craft table for heritage workshops.

2027 Journeys

Xinjiang, north and south

Segmented routes replace the fixed itinerary: choose the segments that interest you and combine them. The Ili valley is given longer stays with three selectable route options, and the whole programme has been upgraded for 2027. Accommodation favours camps, remote guesthouses and hotels inside scenic areas rather than city properties, so the landscape stays in view.

Southwest loop

Culture-led days rather than checklist stops: tea ceremony in old courtyards, thangka painting, light mountain walking, cane-field dining and ethnic wedding scenes. Selected departures use high-end properties such as LUX Chongzuo, Songtsam Shangri-La and Tengchong Stone Village hotels.

What We Arrange and How It Is Priced

We handle the journey end to end: cabin allocation, rail segments, transfers, guided days, dining requests and the ground arrangements around the train. Rates are quoted per departure and per cabin type on request, since they depend on route segment, cabin category and season rather than on a fixed public price.
