Summary
Holiday data: Shanghai's Qingpu outlet and JD's 101HOME flagship spiked, one in four visitors at a Huzhou resort was foreign, Hengqin cleared 120,000 travellers on day one, and shopping has become a reason to travel.

Shanghai's two retail landmarks spiked at the same time
Qingpu Outlet's second phase drew sharply higher visitor numbers and sales over the National Day holiday than a year earlier, with individual brands chasing national single-day sales titles. Across the city, JD.com opened its 101HOME global flagship and had to manage entry with crowd control - a queue to get into a shop, during a holiday week.
What it means: physical retail in Shanghai is behaving like an attraction, not a convenience. Qingpu already appears on shopping itineraries for visitors from Malaysia, Singapore and the Gulf, and a holiday spike like this tells planners that outlet timing belongs in the itinerary rather than at the end of it.
In Huzhou, one visitor in four was foreign
At the Xisai Mountain resort area in Zhejiang, visiting Russian groups spent the holiday learning to brew Chinese tea and tasting local pastries. Foreign guests made up 25-26% of the resort's holiday traffic. The city's figures explain why: Huzhou received 106,200 inbound overnight visitors between January and August, up 34.74% year on year.
What it means: this is the non-first-tier story in one number. A quarter of a resort's holiday guests being foreign is not a gateway-city pattern - it is penetration. It also explains the appeal of a tea workshop: Russian visitors can enter China visa-free until the end of 2027, and the experience they booked was cultural rather than scenic.
Hengqin port cleared 120,000 travellers on day one
Hengqin port processed about 120,000 travellers on 1 October, up 23% year on year, and more than 12,000 vehicles, up 21%. Traffic authorities expect the holiday peak on 3 and 4 October, with a possible single-day high of 140,000 travellers.
What it means: the Guangdong entry picture is now complete. Macao-bound and Zhuhai-bound traffic is growing at a steady double-digit pace, and the peak sits in the middle of the holiday rather than at its start - useful for anyone planning a Guangdong leg around the crowds.
Shopping moved from a stop on the way to the reason for the trip
Two patterns have become visible in how foreign visitors shop in China. The first is the source shopping trip: travellers come specifically for categories where the Chinese market is deeper than home, and build the itinerary around them. The second is localised consumption: instead of chasing tourist districts, visitors buy where residents buy - neighbourhood malls, flagship stores and new retail formats like JD's 101HOME.
What it means: transit visa-free entry keeps feeding both patterns, and the categories are consistent - consumer electronics, new Chinese-brand beauty, and small well-made goods. For an operator, that changes what a free afternoon is for.
What we are watching over the peak window
Three things will show up in next week's data. Whether the Qingpu outlet pattern repeats in tier-2 cities, which would confirm that outlet shopping is now a national habit rather than a Shanghai one. Whether duty-free and tax refund counters keep pace at holiday volumes - the queues, not the policy, are usually the constraint. And whether Hengqin's peak days land at 140,000, which would set a new benchmark for land-border processing. For tour designers the practical question is narrower: if holiday shopping spikes are now a feature rather than a one-off, itineraries built around the first week of October need their retail days booked with the same care as their rail seats.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should shopping be built into an itinerary as a fixed stop?
For some guests, yes - especially travellers from markets where specific categories are cheaper or wider in China. We place it mid-trip rather than on the last day, so luggage and refund paperwork are not a rush - see how we plan the days.
Is the visa-free rule for Russian visitors still in force?
Russian citizens can currently travel to China visa-free for short stays, and the arrangement runs to the end of December 2027. Rules change, so we confirm the applicable entry rule for each traveller's passport before booking.
Why does Hengqin matter for a Guangdong trip?
It is one of the busiest land crossings between Guangdong and Macao. Knowing the peak days - 3 and 4 October this year - lets us schedule the crossing at the quiet end of the day.
