Yunnan First Trip: Kunming, Dali and Lijiang Without a Coach Tour

Summary

Yunnan's classic triangle works beautifully without a coach: rail between Kunming, Dali and Lijiang, altitude to manage, and old towns that reward slow days.

Yunnan First Trip: Kunming, Dali and Lijiang Without a Coach Tour

The Classic Triangle, Without the Bus

Kunming, Dali and Lijiang sit on a line that high-speed rail now covers comfortably. That single fact changes the trip: instead of a coach day between cities, you get a two-hour train and a free afternoon. This is the easiest big-region trip in China to do independently.

Kunming: The Gateway

Kunming is mild year-round - the "spring city" - and works as a soft landing. The Stone Forest is the classic day trip, the Dianchi lakefront and Green Lake Park show daily life, and the food is broad: the province's mushrooms, rice noodles and minority cuisines all meet here. One or two nights is enough.

Dali: Lake and Old Town

Dali's old town sits between the Cangshan mountains and Erhai Lake, and the pleasure is the rhythm rather than any single sight: a morning walk on the old city walls, a cycle along the lake shore, a village on the water. Allow two to three nights. The lake loop by bike or scooter is the best half-day in the region.

Lijiang: Altitude and Old Town

Lijiang's old town is a UNESCO site and busy - go early and stay late. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is the headline excursion and needs a booking; the Black Dragon Pool gives the classic mountain-and-water view. At around 2,400 metres, Lijiang is the point where altitude becomes real: sleep well, drink water, and do not schedule a mountain day for your first morning.

Altitude: The Part Coach Tours Skip

Kunming is comfortable. Lijiang is high. Shangri-La, further north, is higher still and where some travellers feel it. The practical rule: gain height gradually, keep the first day light, and treat headaches as a signal to slow down rather than push on. Our [season calendar]({CAL}) also matters here - Yunnan has a dry season and a rainy one, and they feel like different trips.

Rail, Transfers and Where to Stay

Trains run Kunming-Dali-Lijiang multiple times a day. Dali has two stations (the old town is not the one called "Dali" - check before you book), Lijiang station is 20-30 minutes from the old town, and local taxis and ride-hailing are plentiful. In each town, stay inside or within walking distance of the old town: that is where the evenings are. Station day logistics are covered in our [station guide]({TRAIN}).

Why Go Without a Coach

Yunnan is a province that punishes itineraries. The old towns are best at 7am and 9pm, the lake is best on a bicycle, and the whole point is an unhurried day. We plan exactly this kind of route - bookings handled, days your own - see how the planning works.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do I need for Yunnan?

Seven to ten days for Kunming, Dali and Lijiang at a relaxed pace. Five days is possible but rushed.

Is altitude a problem in Yunnan?

In Lijiang (around 2,400 m) some travellers notice it; Shangri-La is higher. Go slowly on arrival and keep the first day light.

Should I visit Shangri-La?

If you have time and want the Tibetan-plateau edge of the province, yes - but add a night to acclimatise and do not stack it straight after arrival.
