The Bloom That Fills the Valleys

Wuyuan, in Jiangxi's north-east, is a county of Huizhou villages: white walls, dark tile, carved eaves and stone bridges, set in valleys that turn yellow every spring when the rapeseed comes into flower. The combination of architecture and landscape is why photographers made the place famous, and why it now needs planning rather than luck.

Timing the Rapeseed

The bloom runs from early March to early April, with the middle two weeks the safest bet; terraced fields at Jiangling are the classic view, and the higher villages hold their colour slightly longer. The same weeks are the busiest, so book accommodation well ahead and expect early starts to be worthwhile.

Choosing Villages

The county has dozens of villages and the trick is to pick three or four rather than chasing all of them. The best-known are crowded by mid-morning; the smaller ones, reached by winding roads, keep the atmosphere that made the region's reputation. A car and driver for two days is the practical way to move between them.

Beyond Spring

Wuyuan is not only a March destination: the same villages are quiet and green through summer, and autumn brings a different palette of harvest colours and dry, clear light. Outside the bloom, prices and crowds drop sharply, which suits travellers who came for architecture rather than the photograph.
