Train Station Survival: Finding Your Platform in Ten Minutes

The Same System in Every City

Chinese high-speed stations look intimidating from the outside and behave predictably on the inside. Once you know the sequence, a station you have never seen works exactly like the last one.

The Ten-Minute Sequence

1. Arrive 45-60 minutes early. Not for queuing - for absorbing a wrong turn without panic. Large stations in Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou deserve the full hour.

2. Your passport is your ticket. There is no paper ticket to collect for most bookings. Your passport is read at the gate and again at the platform barrier.

3. Security first. Bags through a scanner, liquids allowed, power banks up to the airline-style limit. Lighters and aerosols can be refused.

4. Read the departure board, not the ticket. You need the train number and the waiting area assigned to it. Stations group passengers by train, not by destination.

5. Watch for the gate announcement. The specific gate (and often a platform number) opens roughly 10-15 minutes before departure, and closes 3-5 minutes before the train leaves.

6. Find your coach on the platform. Coach numbers are painted on the floor. Your coach number is on the booking - walk to it rather than boarding the nearest door and pushing through the train.

7. Know which exit to use. Stations have multiple exits, often on different streets. The right exit saves a 20-minute walk; ours are written into the plan for exactly this reason - see how the planning works.

The Three Mistakes That Cost People Their Train

Arriving at the wrong station. Most large cities have several: Beijing has Beijing South, Beijing West and Beijing Chaoyang; Shanghai has Hongqiao and Shanghai Station. Check the exact station name, not just the city.

Treating the gate like an airport. Boarding closes minutes before departure and the doors do not reopen. If the gate has shut, the train has effectively gone.

If Something Does Go Wrong

Missed trains can often be changed to a later departure at the station, depending on the ticket type and how much time remains.
