An Island of Cool Above the Plain

Mount Lushan does not look like a mountain from a distance: it rises out of the flat Yangtze plain in Jiangxi as a plateau wrapped in cloud, with cliffs on one side and a long, wooded ridge on the other. That shape made it a summer retreat - missionaries, officials and writers built villas here a century ago, and the mountain remains a cool, misty world of stone paths, waterfalls and temples above the heat.

The Villas and the Ridge

The old villa district is the mountain's most unexpected sight: hundreds of houses in European and republican styles scattered through the forest, with a museum explaining who built them and why. From the ridge town, paths lead to viewpoints over the plain, and to the cliff-edge walks that made the mountain a subject for Chinese landscape painting.

Waterfalls and Temples

Lushan's waterfalls are its other draw, and the walk down to the best-known cascade is a long descent and a long climb back - worth it in wet weather, when the volume is at its best. Temples, pools and inscriptions line the routes, and the mountain's gardens and tea terraces fill the quieter hours.

Practical Notes

The mountain is reached from Jiujiang by bus or car, with high-speed rail links at Jiujiang and Nanchang. Summer is the traditional season - the mountain is genuinely cool - but it is also the busiest; spring and autumn give mist, colour and far fewer visitors.
