Menyuan and the Qilian Mountains: Qinghai's Summer Bloom

A Valley of Yellow, and Snow Above It

Menyuan, in Qinghai's north-east, is a valley of rapeseed that turns solid yellow in July, with the Qilian Mountains - the range that separates Qinghai from Gansu - rising behind it in snow. The combination is why the area appears on so many summer itineraries, and the drive over the passes adds meadows, yak herds and long views.

Timing the Bloom

The rapeseed usually flowers from early to late July, with the first half of the month the safest bet; the fields sit at around 2,900 metres, which keeps the summer cool. Come early or late in the day for the light, and expect the main viewpoints to be busy at midday in peak weeks.

The Qilian Mountains

The range itself is the reason to keep driving: high passes, alpine meadows, and road sections where the snow line stays within sight through August. The scenery is best around Qilian and Sunan counties, and the grasslands support herds of yak and sheep. Altitude matters here - most of the drive is above 3,000 metres.

Practical Notes

Menyuan is reached by road from Xining (about two hours) or by rail to Menyuan station, and the mountain circuit needs a car and driver for two or three days. Bring sun protection and warm layers: the plateau sun is strong and the evenings are cold even in midsummer.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to see the rapeseed?

Early to mid-July. The bloom lasts a few weeks, so dates shift with the weather - check locally before fixing the trip.

How many days does the area need?

Two days for Menyuan and the nearby passes, three to include the Qilian county grasslands and a longer mountain loop.

Do I need to worry about altitude?

Yes: much of the route is above 3,000 metres. Take the first day gently, drink water, and avoid heavy exertion on arrival.
