3. Hotel tier (per room, per night). The most controllable line. Chinese hotel pricing is genuinely tiered: a well-located three-star and a business four-star can differ by a small margin, while a five-star in a core district is a different order of magnitude. Booking early matters more than picking a brand.

4. Guided days (per day, not per person). Here is the piece most travellers misread: a private guide and vehicle cost roughly the same whether two or six people use them. The cost per person collapses as the group grows - which is why the same itinerary looks expensive for a couple and reasonable for a family.

5. Fixed-capacity bookings (the small, decisive items). Museum slots, high-speed rail seats, tickets for performances, and festival-period hotel rooms. Individually small; together they decide whether a plan can be executed at all. These cannot be bought late.

Where Budgets Go Wrong

Three mistakes account for most cost overruns. Too many cities - each one carries a hidden half-day and a rail fare. Booking hotels late in peak windows - prices rise and choices disappear, and some hotels cannot host foreign guests at all. Treating fixed-capacity items as optional - if a museum slot or a specific train is the point of the day, it is a booking problem, not a spending problem.

1. Fix the dates, then check flights for those dates. 2. Decide the cities - and cap the count. 3. Choose a hotel tier, and price it for your actual nights. 4.
