Why Changsha Is China's Autumn City of the Season

On 14 September 2026 the travel platform Tongcheng released its Mid-Autumn and National Day trend forecast, and one result stood out: in its new "chasing autumn through poetry" ranking, Changsha came first in the country. Ten cities with strong poetic associations to autumn were tracked — Changsha, Xi'an, Nanjing, Nanchang, Hangzhou, Luoyang, Beijing, Wuhan, Shenyang and Shangrao — and hotel booking interest for all ten rose more than 35 percent year on year. Changsha led the list with a 58 percent rise, which is the kind of number that turns a seasonal idea into a travel plan.

Why Poetry, and Why Autumn

The theme is simple: the classic poems Chinese students learn are full of autumn — maples, rivers, moonlit water — and travellers are now using them as itineraries. Changsha's anchor is a couplet by Du Mu, written about a pavilion on Yuelu Mountain: *"Stop the carriage, I love the maple woods at dusk; frost-bitten leaves are redder than spring flowers."* The pavilion named after that line, Aiwan Pavilion, is a listed national heritage site, and the maples around it are approaching their best colour now.

Yuelu Mountain and Aiwan Pavilion

Yuelu Mountain is Hunan's flagship autumn destination: wooded slopes above the Xiang River, temple buildings among the trees, and a summit view over a landscape of red and gold. Aiwan Pavilion is the photograph everyone wants, a red-pillared pavilion set among maples, and it is best in the early morning before the coaches arrive. The mountain is reached from the city centre by metro and bus, with paths climbing from the riverside through the temple grounds to the pavilion.

Orange Isle: Ginkgo, Maples and the Goldenrain Trees

Orange Isle, the long island in the middle of the Xiang River, is the other classic Changsha stop — the subject of Mao Zedong's poem about the city — and in autumn it adds ginkgo and maple colour to its riverside paths. This season the goldenrain trees are the surprise: they line the island's roads in rows, a small train runs beneath them, and a white spiral staircase by the bridge is framed by two of the tallest, which has made it a favourite spot for photographs. From the bridge you can look down the whole avenue.

Baxizhou: The Quieter Island

Baxizhou, a smaller island further upstream, is where Changsha residents go to avoid the crowds: more than 90 percent of it is planted, and there are fewer visitors than on Orange Isle. Its autumn draw is a flower meadow that opens like fireworks at ground level, on a dedicated walking path that keeps visitors off the plants, and the blooms last into early October. Add reed beds and more goldenrain trees, and the island delivers several kinds of autumn in one walk. It sits close to the Dawangshan resort area and the Huayi Brothers film-themed town, and its lawns are open for camping.

Planning Around the Holiday Rush

The report's numbers point to a crowded holiday: Mid-Autumn and National Day fall together in 2026, and the ten cities on the list are where the demand is concentrating. The practical response is to book hotels and rail tickets as early as the system allows, to visit the famous spots at opening time, and to put the quieter island — Baxizhou — on a weekday morning rather than a holiday afternoon. Changsha is well connected by high-speed rail to Zhangjiajie, Fenghuang and the rest of Hunan, so the autumn trip can continue westward instead of doubling back.
