Arxan is a forested volcanic area in eastern Inner Mongolia, close to the Mongolian border, and it is one of the least-visited landscapes in China: birch and larch woodland, volcanic crater lakes, alpine meadows, and hot springs that have been used for generations. Getting there takes commitment, which is exactly why the roads are empty.

What You See

The national forest park is the core: a chain of crater lakes and volcanic formations connected by roads and boardwalks, with the Tianchi crater lake at the centre. Around it, the Halaha River valley and the surrounding grassland-edge country offer meadows, forest paths and views over the Greater Khingan range.

Hot Springs and Season

Arxan's springs are the traditional reason for the journey, with pools in and around the town. The best seasons are early summer for green forest and wildflowers, and late September for the larch turning gold - both short windows. Winter is severe and largely closes the park.

Practical Notes

Arxan has a small airport with seasonal connections, and most travellers arrive by road from Ulanhot or Hailar, which means a car and driver for several days. Accommodation is limited and should be booked ahead in the two peak windows; cash and offline maps are worth carrying in the remoter valleys.
